Born of the Tradition, Ahead of the Future New Shanghai—a prelude to the 3rd New Music Week 2010 of SCM

With your kind support and loving care, our New Music Week is growing healthy and strong like a toddler and it has produced a markedly positive impact on our musical life. The 3rd New Music Week will move on even more vigorously with “Born of the Tradition, Ahead of the Future” as its theme and slogan.

Its one of the most striking features is the concert portraits within the five days for six maestro composers, Gyorgy Ligety (Hungary), Tristan Murail (France), Toshio Hosokawa (Japan), Xu Shuya (China), Jia Daqun (China). All their works are given the first performance in China. Perhaps even more thrilling is that three of the six maestros, Tristan Murail, Xu Shuya, Jia Daqun, are to come in person and comment on the Concert for the International Students’ Works for the student composers and the audience.

The Concert for the Dialogue Between the Traditional and the Contemporary, performed by three internal and foreign folkloric ensembles together with Ensemble Les Temps Modernes (France), is to give a vivid and lively interpretation of the theme for the 3rd New Music Week. The Special Concert of New Works for Traditional instruments by Composers from SCM (Shanghai Conservatory of Music), performed by the Traditional Music Department of SCM on 60 Pipas and 13 Suonas, is to enlighten the audience as well as entertain them through their unusual musical language.

The Special Concert for Chamber Music by Taiwan Composers and Dialogue Between Composers Across the Straits both demonstrate that music is a magic formula for settling political differences.

The Workshop on Chinese and Foreign Contemporary Music Symposium for the 3rd New Music Week 2010 offers a forum for composers and musicologists to express themselves freely and the publication of these papers embodies in miniature of this achievement.

Thanks to the accomplishment presentation by these internal and foreign performers without considering their personal gain, the support from leaders and the cooperation among different departments and offices of SCM at all levels, the funding from domestic and overseas foundations, especially “Hu Jingmin New Music Fund”, New Music Week can get where it is today and it can’t make any bricks without straw otherwise since contemporary music is so fragile and vulnerable in the musical world.
