Prelude 2011
Today with diversity is a day of prosperity----Prelude to New Shanghai, the fourth New Music Week 2011 Shanghai Conservatory of Music
The New Music Week continues to grow in its 4th edition along with the spirit of the times and at the pulse of the current music world after thriving on pressures in the past 3 years, with each year’s attendance increasing by over 1 ,000 from fist year’s 5,000 plus. The growing number of audience carries its great significance in 3 aspects. First, it is a sign that contemporary music has run into the comparatively mature phase after quite a long time of experimentation and begins to appeal to more and more people. Second, it also tells us that audience for Contemporary music expends through arduous cultivation just as ears become more sensitive through training. Third, this New Music Week itself keeps improving too. From the very beginning, the organizers of the New Music Week always set themselves the high standard that people should be ensured not only contemporary music that can be enjoyed in Paris, Berlin, London and New York, but also those musical works that can hardly be found in these places and adhere to the principle of promoting distinctive modern styles, concerts portrait of outstanding composers, internationally first-rate programming as well as high-level performance, giving consideration to both scholarly communication needs for higher music education and musical aesthetics and humanism. This edition offers 11 concerts and 8 lectures during the 5 days from Sep. 25th to 29th in 2011. Its resident composers are Brian Ferneyhough, a renowned British composer of New Complexity School of composition, and Tan Dun, a distinguished Chinese composer recognized as John Cage’s successor in the international musical world. Apart from the portrait concerts of the two resident composers, this music week hosts concerts portrait of French composer Gérard Grisey, Father of Spectralism, Greek composer Iannis Xenakis, known for integrating scientific reason into musical sensibility and American composer John Cage, the most courageous and creative composer in the musical history. Most of the musical works at these concerts are played by two internationally acclaimed Ensembles, Amsterdam Nieuw Ensemble from Holland and Nouvel Ensemble from Canada. What’s more, this edition will witness how its theme is to perfectly interpreted by the Dialogue Between Body movements and sound, a contemporary dance Portrait of Jin Xing by Contemporary Dance group of Jin Xing, and the Diversified Mantra-Guqin Concert by Ani Choying Drolma from Nepal and Chen Gongliang from China Nanjing, one of the leading exponents of the Guangling school of Gu Qin (Chinese heptachord) players. Besides, during this music week audience will find that the Contemporary Music Criticism Contest enjoys a lot more democracy than the Concert and Criticism for International Students’ Quartets. With the former the three winners is to be voted out by every listener while with the latter those young composers have to put their fates in the hands of the two resident composers. This edition 2011 is the last one of the three editions on ends enjoying sponsoring from Hu Jingmin New Music Foundation. Just as its patron hoped, its three-year sponsoring serves as a wake-up call for a lot more people of great vision to get involved and lend a hand in this special public welfare cause. More support, both financially and otherwise, comes from many volunteers, different departments and offices of Shanghai Conservatory of music, Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation and cultural foundations from abroad, for which all of us feel so joyful and thankful because the good wish by Hu Jingmin New Music Foundation is coming to reality. What could I say but express my sincere gratitude to them on behalf of our audiences totaling nearly 20, 000 for their labor, material and financial support and make every endeavor to do it better?Deqing WEN Artistic Director of the New Music Week Shanghai Conservatory of Music |
