Brian John Peter Ferneyhough born 16 January 1943 in Coventry is an English composer of contemporary classical music. His music is characterized by the extensive use of complex rhythmic tuplet notation (sometimes called irrational rhythm) which features in all his works. He has written for many different formations from solo, to chamber works, to orchestral pieces, to opera. His music sometimes “deliberately draw(s) attention to the performer’s physical limitations by presenting a score that is so physically demanding as to be virtually impossible, leading to theatricality in performance, as well as the production of noises that are ambiguously 'extraneous' to the score and an intended outcome of its extreme complexity. A foregrounding of physicality (and its limitations) is made possible, and interesting, because it is not marked in (some) other styles.”
